Flooring, revisited. (Or: Why You Shouldn't go to Big Box Stores)

Ok- so remember that little talk we had about the flooring? Well, it turned out there's been a slight change in plan.

We took advantage of the rainy weather to visit a lumbar yard out on the Cape called Stonewood Products. In addition to some really cool reclaimed lumber and live edge pieces, they also had this dirt-cheap ash flooring, and fortunately, they had 156 square feet of it left. We bought it, and saved about $300 over what we would have paid for the bamboo flooring at Home Depot.

The bad news is that the installation won't be as simple as the click-lock Home Depot stuff. The ash is unfinished, so we'll have to fix it up ourselves. The example above shows two different finishes: the top is a grey stain, and the bottom is tung oil. Tung oil looks great, but I think we might give this a shot (if we have the time):

The bottom line is that we found a great deal at a lumber yard and I think that our floor will be better at the end of the day for it. So, yeah, Don't settle for the options that are available at the big box stores without checking out the other options.
